Diego Velazquez is one of the world’s most famous artists. Representative of 17th century European painting, he worked for the Spanish court and for the most important figures, completing numerous portraits. Yet, passionate about the human figure, his oeuvre also encompasses bodegones, representations of daily life in the taverns and kitchens of Spain. Considered the father of Spanish painting, Velazquez inspired entire generations of the artists who followed him, including Picasso, Dali, and Bacon. His mysterious painting Las Meninas, which contains the essence of his work, is still today an inexhaustible source for writing and research.
Spain's greatest baroque painter, Velazquez was an artist of tremendous gills who painted virtuostic portraits of Spanish nobility that imbued his subjects with mystery, as well as quotidian scenes of cheerful and satisfying domestic activties. An admirer of Rubens, Titian. Michelangelo, and Raphael. Velazquez's paintings are deeply rich in color and mood and exhibit a humanistic spirit toward religious subject matter, whose figures he enlivened and emboldened. For more than thirty years, Velazquez resided in the palace of bis patron. King Philip IV. as court painter, executing portraits of the king and members of the royal family and court, some of whom are most fatuously depicted in his towering masterpiece Las Meninas (The Ladies-in-Waiting), ill 1656, a veritable theater of perspective interplas and baroque illusion. Velazquez's understanding of character and atmosphere and the individuality and masterful technique he brought to his paintings, have conic to be regarded as representative of the pinnacle of the golden age of Spanish realism. The art of Francis Bacon epitomises the angst at the heart of the modern human condition. His dramatic images of screaming figures and distorted anatomies are painted with a richly gestural technique, alluding to such old masters as Titian, Velazquez and Rembrandt. Displaying repressed and raw emotion, his body of work includes portraits of Lucian Freud and John Deakin.
Francisco de Goya was a Spanish painter and engraver. He began his work in etching by copying the works of Velazquez, but was quickly recognized in his own right. His repertoire consists of portraits as well as representations of the warfare since his work reflects the turmoil of Spain during the Napoleonic war. Goya was famous for his technique and his freedom of expression. This book assembles all of the artist’s masterpieces, including his The Majanude

For ten years Geordie Greig was among a very small group of friends who regularly met Lucian Freud for breakfast at Clarke’s restaurant on Kensington Church Street. Over tea and the morning papers, Freud would recount stories of his past and discuss art. It was, in effect, Freud’s private salon. In this kaleidoscopic memoir, Greig remembers Freud’s stories: of death threats; escaping from Nazi Germany; falling out with his brother Clement; loathing his mother; painting David Hockney; sleeping with horses; escaping the Krays; painting the Queen; his controversial role as a father; and why Velazquez was the greatest painter. It is revelatory about his art, his lovers, his children, his enemies and his love of gambling. Freud dared never to do dull, speaking candidly of dancing with Garbo as well as painting Kate Moss naked. Those closest to him, after decades of silence and secrecy, have spoken frankly about what life was like living, loving or sitting for the greatest figurative portraitist of the twentieth century. Partly based on hours of taped conversations with the artist and his circle, and drawing on interviews with those who knew Freud intimately – including many girlfriends, models, dealers and bookmakers – Breakfast with Lucian is an intimate portrait of the artist as a young and old man. Illustrated with many unseen photographs of Freud, it is a uniquely fascinating, personal and authoritative account of one of the greatest British painters of this century and the last, and a profile of a man who makes everyone else's life seem less lived.
