Bram Stoker was an Irish novelist, best known today for his universally famous gothic novel "Dracula", the main villain of which is still one of the most popular antagonists in the modern media. "The Lady of the Shroud" is a gothic novel that tells the story of Rupert Saint Leger. He inherits an estate worth more than one million pounds, but on one condition: he must live for a year in his uncle's castle in the Land of the Blue Mountains, near the Dalmatian coast However, one night, a pale woman wearing a wet shroud visits the estate. She dries herself and stays for the night but flees before morning. It takes several visits for Rupert to fall in love, despite believing that she is a vampire living in the crypt.

This eloquent and generously illustrated book asserts that artists were fascinated by and extremely skilled at still life significantly earlier than previously thought. Instead of the genre beginning in the early 17th century, noted scholar David Ekserdjian explores its origins in classical antiquity and the gradual re-emergence of still life in Renaissance painting. The author presents a visual anthology of finely executed flowers, fruit, food, household objects, and furnishings seen in the background of paintings. Paintings are reproduced in full and paired with detailed close-ups of still-life elements within the work.Ekserdjian further examines both the artistic and symbolic significance of a chosen detail, as well as information about each artist's career. Featured works include radiant paintings from Renaissance greats such as Da Vinci, D'rer, Holbein, Michelangelo, Raphael, and Van Eyck, as well as the work of less-celebrated masters Barth'lemy d'Eyck and Ortolano.
Publication Date: 13 Mar 2012 The exhibition and its accompanying catalogue explore the abiding themes of still life across the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries: the fruit piece, the game piece, kitchen and banquet still lifes, the flower painting, musical instruments, the cabinet of curiosities, and the trompe-loeil. The diversity of artistic treatment of these themes in different countries will be shown through related works, such as the fruit still lifes of the female artists Louise Moillon and Fede Galizia or the kitchen scenes by Jean-Simeon Chardin and Luis Melendez. Other artists who cultivated this genre and who are also represented in the exhibition and in the catalogue include Juan Sanchez Cotan, Juan van der Hamen, Pieter Claesz, Juan Zurbaran, Rembrandt van Rijn, Antonio de Pereda, Nicolas Largillierre, Jean-Baptiste Oudry, Luis de Melendez and Francisco de Goya. The exhibition has been made possible due to the commitment of the many lending institutions, private collectors and museums, such as the National Gallery of Art in Washington, The Metropolitam Museum in New York, The Louvre Museum, The Prado Museum, The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, The Mauritshuis in The Hague, The National Gallery in London and the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, among so many others. This volume allows an insight into the theme, through the essays and the individual studies of all paintings, written by such scholars as Peter Cherry, John Loughman and Lesley Stevenson. Volume II, devoted to still-life painting in the 19th and 20th centuries, is due for publication in October 2011.

Before the official appearance of the animal genre in fine art, masters combined elements of art and natural history, inspired by their own love of nature. The first professional animal artists appeared in China during the T'ang dynasty in the eighth century and the Sung dynasty in the thirteenth century. In Europe, animal art first developed in the Netherlands and Flanders in the seventeenth century (Paul Potter, Frans Snyders and Jan Fyt), before spreading to France (Jean-Baptiste Oudry), Russia and other countries in the eighteenth century. For a long time, animalism was linked to such other realms of fine art as genre, landscape and still-life painting. To this day, the official borders of the genre are still unclear, particularly in decorative and applied art. Формат: 25 см x 31 см.
Dawn breaks over Vancouver and no-one in the world has slept the night before, or almost no-one. A few people, perhaps one in ten thousand can still sleep, and they've all shared the same golden dream. A handful of children still sleep as well, but what they're dreaming remains a mystery. After six days of absolute sleep deprivation, psychosis will set in. After four weeks, the body will die. In the interim, panic ensues and a bizarre new world arises in which those previously on the fringes of society take the lead. One couple experience a lifetime in a week as he continues to sleep, she begins to disintegrate before him, and the new world swallows the old one whole...
New York City in 1978 is a dirty, dangerous place to live. And die. Joey Peacock has spent the last forty years as an adolescent vampire, perfecting his routine: feeding by night and sleeping by day with others of his kind in the macabre labyrinth under the city's sidewalks. Until one night he sees them hunting on his beloved subway. Vampires, like him...or not like him. Whatever they are, whatever their appearance means, the undead in the tunnels of Manhattan are not as safe as they once were. And neither are the rest of us.
This book is about the question of existence, the meaning of ‘life’. It is an enquiry into the contemporary human situation as disclosed by television. The elementary components of any real-world situation are place, people and time. These are first examined as basic existential phenomena drawing on Heidegger’s fundamental enquiry into the human situation in Being and Time. They are then explored through the technological and production care-structures of broadcast television which, routinely and exceptionally, display the situated experience of being alive and living in the world today. It shows routinely in the live self-enactments of persons being themselves and the liveness of their ordinary talk on television. It shows exceptionally in television coverage of great occasions and catastrophes as they unfold live and in real time. Case studies reveal the existential role of television in salvaging the possibility of genuine experience, and in revealing the world-historical character of life today. To explore these questions, the agenda of sociology – its concern with economic, political and cultural life – is set aside. Being in the world is not, in the first (or last) instance, a social but an existential question, as an existential enquiry into television today discovers. Passionate and sweeping in scale, this new book from a leading media scholar is a major contribution to our understanding of the media today.
